Frequently Asked Questions

What types of roller and compactor can I hire?

We list 1.5 tonne and 2.7 tonne ride-on rollers for surfacing and sub-base work, plus a range of heavy compactor plates from 5 to 30 to 40 tonnes for deep fill and earthworks. Our network can typically source pedestrian (walk-behind) rollers, trench rollers, handheld wacker plates and trench rammers (jumping jacks) too, subject to availability. The right one depends on the area, the material and the depth you’re compacting. Tell us about the job and we’ll spec it.

Should I hire a single drum or twin (double) drum roller?

Twin-drum rollers compact from both drums and cover ground fast, so they’re the usual choice for tarmac, footpaths and large flat areas. Single-drum rollers put more force through one drum and steer well in tighter spots, which suits sub-base and cohesive soils. If you’re surfacing a drive or car park, a twin drum is normally the better fit, and our team will confirm.

What size roller do I need, and which weights are available?

Our listed ride-on rollers come in 1.5 tonne and 2.7 tonne classes, the 1.5 tonne suiting paths, driveways and smaller areas and the 2.7 tonne covering car parks and road sub-bases in fewer passes. For heavier earthworks we run compactor plates up to 30 to 40 tonnes, and we can typically source lighter pedestrian rollers subject to availability. Give us the area and access and we’ll match the weight.

When should I use a compactor plate instead of a roller?

A vibrating plate is ideal for compacting sub-base and bedding under patios, drives and block paving, and for smaller areas a roller can’t reach economically. Our listed compactor plates run heavy, from 5 up to 30 to 40 tonnes for deep granular fill and earthworks, and we can typically source smaller handheld wacker plates subject to availability. For large flat surfaces or finishing tarmac, a ride-on roller is quicker. Tell us the surface and we’ll point you to the right kit.

What’s the difference between a wacker plate and a trench rammer?

A wacker plate spreads vibration across a wide base, so it’s best on open, flat granular surfaces. A trench rammer (jumping jack) drives a small foot with heavy impact, making it the right tool for narrow trenches and cohesive or clay soils where you need deep, focused compaction. We can typically source both subject to availability, so for backfilling service trenches just tell us the ground and we’ll confirm which suits.

What is a pedestrian roller used for?

Pedestrian or walk-behind rollers are designed for footpaths, driveways, small car parks and patching where a ride-on is too big, and need no licence to use. We can typically source one subject to availability, and where a little more output suits the job our listed 1.5 tonne ride-on roller is the smallest machine we stock. Let us know the area and we’ll recommend the right option.

Do I need a licence or training to use a roller?

There’s no road licence needed to use a roller on site, but for commercial work whoever runs it should be competent and ideally hold an NPORS or CPCS qualification for ride-on rollers, with a CSCS card often required on site. Pedestrian rollers and plates need no formal qualification. Just make sure whoever uses it holds the right qualification for the machine.

How quickly can you deliver a roller or compactor?

It depends on your location and current availability. We coordinate delivery and collection through our supplier network, and can often help with urgent or time-critical jobs, subject to availability. Send us your site postcode and we’ll confirm a realistic delivery time.

Which areas do you cover for roller and compactor hire?

We provide roller hire and compactor hire nationwide across the UK, from 1.5 and 2.7 tonne ride-on rollers to heavy compactor plates. Send us your site postcode when you enquire and we’ll confirm availability and delivery.

How do I get in touch?

The easiest way is through our contact page, where you can call or email us and the team will get straight back to you. We’re based in Croydon and arrange hire right across the UK, so wherever your site is, tell us what you need and we’ll sort the right kit and a price.
